Went there to watch the waves hit some interesting rock formations. Nice very short walk to a viewpoint. Part of a scenic loop. The road is a bit washed out so be careful out there

We were visiting from the midwest. Taking Westhaven Drive west from the 101, you'll come across a sign pointing south to Moonstone Beach and North to Luffenholtz Beach. The road to the parking area, Scenic Drive, was a mix of old uneven pavement and gravel, but the sign for the beach was easy to find. At around 10 am (low tide) on a Tuesday morning, we were the only ones there. Next to the stairs leading to the beach there are signs advising all of the ways you need to be cautious, including locking your car and not leaving valuables in the car (and based on the guy who ran and took off in his battered truck as he saw us coming back up the stairs, it seems like good advice). You'll take a winding set of timber stairs down to a rocky landing on the beach. We arrived at low tide, so the beach around the stairs was dry. Several yards in front of the rocky landing is a 4-6 foot-wide, widely meandering stream leading to the ocean. If you follow the stream bank leftward, you can access the rest of the beach without crossing the stream, but it's not deep, and if you have water shoes, you can wade in it. Beyond the stream, there is a large rocky section at the south of the beach composing the main tide pool area. There is a mix of large rocks and sand on the rest of the beach. The rocks in the tide pool are big enough to step on but aren't always stable, so use caution. Luffenholtz felt smaller, more enclosed, and wild than most of the other beaches in the area. If you're looking for something a little different, I think this is it!

Cool beach, best at low tide, lots of tide pools and sea creatures. Water gets rowdy some days...real rowdy. Bit hard to find, entrances not very clearly defined but worth the hunt if you can find the pull offs. Would give 5 stars but the lookout was closed. We came from Texas so wont be able to go back anytime soon, but will if we ever get back that way!

Yes there are some steps down to the beach. On the morning I went to check out the tide pools, it was pretty quiet. Only one other couple there with their dogs. The sand is very dark and it was beautiful watching the sun come up and start highlighting the rocks farther out, then the crest of the waves.

great place to watch the sunset from your car or if you want there is a short walk down some stairs to the beach itself. Great rock formations and a creek coming into the ocean. The photography compositions are endless. It is pretty popular with the locals and has limited parking so its best to get here a little early if you want a close place to park and a good view

The path down to the beach had some pretty steep and slippery stairs so take your time navigating them. Once you're down at the bottom you'll find a small stream that you'll probably have to cross if you want to go further along the beach. Plenty of rocks to sit on and enjoy the sunset.

One of my favorite beaches, despite the serious, no handrails stairs down ... it's like stepping off the edge of the earth to go down. Last I saw, it was taking a pounding from the Cyclone Bomb/Atmospheric River events that came into play this winter, 9 in all. I come here to get away from things, only usually a few people around at any given time. Beautiful and wild and definitely "Lost Coast" feel...

Gorgeous rocky beach with great views from high rocks, to nice tide pools, small creeks and large ones to traverse. Lots of families visiting today with kids playing in creeks, digging holes, and some folks fishing. Plenty of surfing in nearby beach. Two places to park, make sure to find the nice steps down, some unofficial paths are steep. Well worth visiting and seeing Trinidad just north of this beach.
