Deer Hill Expeditions is a small organization with a lot of heart and passion for getting youth and young adults into the outdoors! The programs they facilitate are thoughtful and have long standing ties to the peoples and communities in which they operate. Their Basecamp in Mancos, CO, is a first class location, with excellent facilities, communal spaces, natural exploration, and even a small pond to play in! The food that is prepared on base and for their rafting programing is excellent, however the food for backpacking portions is a little heavy but is still quite good. This is an organization which has been changing lives for 40 years, and is striving for further financial resources to attain the next level of excellence. ❤️

My 14 year old had a positive life changing time on the expedition with Deer Hill in July. Maison learned new things about nature and the Navajo culture, made new friends and pushed himself physically during the river rafting and high country backpacking/camping. Maison came home ready to go on anothet adventure next year!

Deer Hill was impressive from the moment we arrived on campus to the end of our school rafting trip on the San Juan River. We were fortunate to raft and camp out in such amazing wilderness locations; we saw so much wildlife and beauty it was hard to believe! The guides were all skilled, energetic, patient, and encouraging to the students which made it hard to leave them when the trip ended. I cannot say enough positive things about our guides and the truly wonderful experience they helped us enjoy.

I attended a Deer Hill Expedition last year, summer 2022. I went on the Canyon Country expedition and it was truly life changing. My group and I became a family, many of those kids and I still continue to stay in contact, regardless the distance barriers. We were teenagers from all over the U.S, with different reasons for attending but in the end, we were all immensely grateful and happy with what we experienced. Our guides were some of the best, if not THE best, they were young and trained. The way Roger, Kayla and Emma helped us out and guided us was truly amazing, you could tell they had a love for what they do and they made the 3 week trip, even more enjoyable. During and since the expedition, I have grown even more as an individual, memories that will never be forgotten, I truly did find myself in the middle of nowhere. Thank you so much, I wish I would’ve been able to go on another expedition this year, I really miss the experience we got out there. Thank you for the best experience of our lives.

It's hard to share how valuable this program is for our son's growth. He is a slow thaw in new groups and this program brings out the best in him. The model--time on a Western river plus camping in the mountains plus service--matches our family's values perfectly. Our son LOVED the service part of the trip this year (we are a repeat family), having said that he has never been somewhere so open and hospitable. He comes away from each trip with his spine straighter and his voice firm and confident, and he carries many of the important lessons from the trip with him throughout the year. We feel so lucky to be part of the Deer Hill family.

My trip with Deerhill was truly an incredible experience that I couldn’t recommend more! Not only does it offer you the ability to spend time immersed in nature but it also surrounds you with amazing people. It was a formative experience and has solidified my love for the outdoors as well as my sense of independence and adventure!
