This is such a great hike! The payoff for the uphill is a sage-scented summit that is attainable at any age. The views are pretty incredible on clear or inclement days. I hiked with thunder clouds along the neighboring peaks and loved watching and listening to them roll past. The place is serene, farm land in the foreground, glacier field on one side, river twists on the other. It is popular with families, avid hikes and photographers. There are two ways up, I suggest the Sandvik side because there are views all the way to the top. They family allows the public access and asks for donations, the ask for $4...put a $5 in (that’s what all the maintained parks charge). Depending on your pace and picture taking stops, probably a 1/2 hour to an hour to the top.

Update Summer 2024: There are two sides to climb, the other is less steep. This one allows for some rock scrambling and a real leg workout! The conditions are great, they continue to maintain the trails well for all to enjoy! I am rating this side a moderate hike, simply because it is a little steeper…however some might consider it easy.

My daughter and I had a great time on this impromptu hike. It took us just over an hour up and back, (I am not in the greatest of shape!) I STRONGLY recommend not wearing sandals, (did I mention impromptu? ?), as I ended up barefoot for most until the rock face at the top. There is another access that has more switchbacks and stairs. This trail is pretty much vertical. The hike is worth the view!

Went here about a year ago but forgot what the name of the trail was, but I never forget the hike! As someone out of state I'd suggest putting pants as well as keeping a close eye on your little ones, as there are a few different plants alongside the trail that I'm afraid you'd regret running into. Wonderful hike with a wonderful view in a wonderful state! I'd rate it 10 stars if I could!

This is a very steep trail on a non-groomed dirt path that might be dangerous when damp or muddy. If you want a rapid assent/decent this is the trailhead to use -- just be careful of the barbed wire fence along the way. Otherwise seek the better West Butte Trailhead on Bodenburg Butte which is longer and more gradual except for the .25 miles of stairs and has a clear groomed path to the peak.

Great views and challenging hike. Just be aware that there are 2 trails. A very steep one next to the reign Reindeer Farm and a friendlier one on the opposite side of the mountain. Also recently thieves have been breaking into cars

Prepare to do some walking. We weren't fully prepared as a family of 6 with 2 dogs on our visit. Only made it about 3/4 miles up & it's quite steep but we will be ready next time. Amazing views.

Muddy, windy, and awesome. Maybe any hiking in late Winter or early Spring is foolish, but the short, steep hike up The Butte in Palmer was too tempting to pass up. Snow melts on the east side of the hill early due to winds coming down the Knik river valley. This makes for a windy, muddy ascent if you take the South trail. Try the north trail instead. It's better maintained and climbs the west face out of the wind. It's a longer trail though, so plan for the extra time.

There are two trails. This is not the easy to moderate good for family trail. Steep, dusty, hard in some parts to recognize where the trail goes. The view from the top is worth it.
