Wow! What a gem! An authentic 18th century home in beautiful condition. Our tour guide was the exceptionally talented Asst. Curator, Elizabeth Dillon. We were fortunate to have her as our private tour guide. She had an answer to every question and every "And what is this item?"

This is a hidden gem just off of Route 30 in Columbia, PA. See it before it is turned into a residential house as so many colonial homes have become.

Benjamin Franklin himself was a welcomed guest in this home. Just picture him sitting in the parlor talking to Suzanna Wright about his latest inventions.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for taking so much time with us on the tour.

Please note: tours are given on the hour.

There is also a bank museum within walking distance of the Wright Mansion. We'll be back to see this.

Our tour guide Tess was simply fabulous! She knew so much about Suzanne Wright and her history. All the furniture and contents of the house were from the first half of the 1700's. Obviously great care has been given to keep it so true to the time period. Tess spoke about topics from the local history to how to raise silk worms and make silk. She made the experience memorable.
If I could give TEN stars I would.

💎 Absolute gem! Most of the building (external and internal doors, door frames, plaster walls, paneling, floors, stairs) are original to the early 1700’s when it was built by Susannah Wright. A very industrious, single, young woman who travelled to the frontier of the Susquehanna in 1726 with her Quaker family. She had the house built in 1738 on 100 of her own acres and established the ferry with her brother (who set up on the other side of the river). She ran a tavern and inn for river travelers, established a silk farm that supplied even Queen Charlotte with silk, had orchards and crops for rope and clothes making. The house was conserved by the man who did Independence Hall so it is really well done. Ben Franklin was a friend a frequent guest. All of the furnishings are authentic period pieces. Tour guides are very knowledgeable and can answer seemingly any question. I have toured dozens and dozens of museum homes/mansions up and down the East coast - this is easily top 5! Very well done! Thank you Elizabeth for a wonderful tour!
Note: Tours only on the hour.

We stopped in while visiting Columbia for the first time. We were very impressed with the museum. We have been to a lot of similar places but what stood out about this house was how much of it was original to the 1700s. In addition out guide was simply fantastic! She was extremely knowledgeable and able to answer nearly every question we asked. We highly recommend visiting!

This place is a local treasure. Our docent Tess Wilson was excellent - adapting her information and stories to all 8 of us in the group (ranging in age from 9 to 70). Tess gave us a wealth of information about the building, its furnishings, the grounds and especially about the remarkable Susanna Wright herself. We all had lots of questions which were answered thoroughly by Tess. What is usually an hour tour became two hours because we were so engrossed in the experience. Thanks to the Louise Steinman Von Hess Foundation for saving this important piece of history and restoring it so carefully.
