An exceptionally beautiful lake at wintertime. If you visit on the southern shore you can see an extremely interesting rock formations directly in front of the beach with a stunning snowy mountain background.

The lake was perfectly accessible in late November.

This place is incredible. Well worth the visit when staying in Mammoth or on your way in or out of Yosemite.

Let me help you: put SOUTH TUFA AREA on your Google Maps to get to the best spot. This place is a photographer's paradise.

*There is a charge of $3 per person when you enter the area. Parking was easy. Bathrooms are available. The structure is great with a boardwalk all the way to the lake and tufas. You are also able to hike surrounded by tufas in this spot (help preserve them by not touching).

This was my second time in Mono Lake and my photos are so different from the first time (which was during the summer, rather than the fall as this time). Highly recommend it. California is amazing!

Mono Lake is a soda lake located in Mono County in central-eastern California and in a drainless basin below the Sierra Nevada. Due to the high salt content and high pH value, an ecosystem of a few very adapted creatures has developed around Mono Lake. Since drinking water has been pumped out of the lake's catchment area for the city of Los Angeles since the 1940s, the lake's water level has continuously fallen, while the salinity has increased and parts of the lake bed have dried out. This is how the bizarre limestone tuff formations for which the lake is famous today became visible. In combination with the rough landscape and the mountain panorama in the background, it is a very special place. If you pass here on the way to/from Yosemite National Park, you should definitely stop and explore this very unique lake. The Mono Lake Committee Information Center & Bookstore located in Lee Vining provides further information on Mono Lake and on the environmental protection measures that take place around it.

Amazing experience and quite unique. Thanks to the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center staff for their recommendations. We only had an hour or so, on our way back to L.A. to see the Tufa formations in Mono Lake. We took the South Tufa entrance and marveled at the sights. Highly recommended!
