Double Shovel is an amazing locally-owned Alaskan business and we highly recommend them for an adventure in the Arctic! Every aspect of our trip was great – from an initial phone call with Charlie (the owner, to discuss our interests for the trip), to our ride from Fairbanks to the small village of Circle (where our trip began). Charlie’s wife was our driver, and learning about her life in Alaska made the miles fly by. Charlie’s dad was our driver for the return trip, and his adventure stories were also riveting. Charlie flew us up into the lower Brooks Range to start an 8-night trip on the Sheenjek River. The flight was stunning, and while we were in transit, our incredible guide Emma had been busy hauling gear from the landing lake to the river and setting things up for the trip. Charlie and Emma have been friends since childhood – they both grew up spending fall-spring in the backcountry on their family’s homesteads. No electricity, no phones, (“not a single luxury” to quote the Gilligan’s Island theme song). Their childhoods of adventure and living in a rustic environment provided them both with skill and confidence in Alaska’s wild paces. Emma impressed us right away, and our first night I asked what concerns she has when she’s in the backcountry. She told us nothing concerns her; driving in Anchorage traffic is far more intimidating than any challenge the backcountry brings! Her competence and confidence were contagious, and we were easily able to fall into the rhythm of days paddling on the river and evenings running on sand bars (my husband and I were both training for long-distance running events during the trip) and feasting on incredible meals that Emma prepared. It’s worth noting that Charlie created a special menu to accommodate our dietary restrictions, and every single meal was outstanding. We’re used to loosing weight on backcountry trips b/c we just can’t eat enough to keep up with the calories we burn…. We actually came out weighing about the same as we went in- a true first! Highlights of the trip include the amazing scenery and changing terrain of the river; seeing moose, incredible birds, and a lynx (and hearing a lynx one evening); seeing loads of wolf prints and heard one our first night; and hearing stories of Emma’s experiences in the backcountry. From how-to-do laundry in below zero temperatures without electricity or running water, to her more recent adventures training sled dogs and winning a race with her young team of dogs she’s raised since puppyhood, Emma’s adventures kept us riveted. Whether you’re like us and looking for a supported first experience in Alaska’s backcountry to make sure your skills translate to the wildness and remoteness before taking on your own expedition, or you’re newer to the backcountry or just want to get above the Arctic Circle and experience the incredible beauty and minimal human impact, Double Shovel is a great company. Charlie only books individual groups, so you & whoever you share this adventure with get to have a unique experience free of the uncertainty of whether you will enjoy the companionship of strangers on a larger group trip. We can only say good things about our experience!
