Friendly staff. Newly remodeled. Comfortable new mattress and pillows and new bathroom fixtures. Single queen room was small and cozy, with good size bathroom. Easy parking. Typical light breakfast fare with good coffee. Will definitely stay here again.

I am thoroughly disappointed with this establishment. I was born and raised in California and moved to Illinois, we came down to see some old friends and family and to introduce my husband to them all. So we were very excited to be there. It started to go down hill from when my husband had a hard time with the check in process, and as soon as we checked in and walked around to our room we noticed that the elevator was dirty, staircase looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in forever, you could tell the room was halfway cleaned. It had a musty smell, sticky bathroom floors? barely any amenities, no fridge, no microwave. No coffee maker, and dust covering all the surfaces. One of the worst things we saw was hair on the toilets and stained sheets, very poor Housekeeping. I am a person who just don’t have the heart to come to the front desk and complain, complain, complain. But, hey! We were there so we stuck it out. Breakfast was disappointing, barely anything to eat, simple cold processed microwave food, nothing special, so we just walked over to rosebuds, Holly, the front desk clerk was friendly. However, I was not impressed with the front desk clerk Kara, who seemed dismissive and artificial, as she went through the motions without any genuine interest, Her demeanor suggested that she would rather not be working, which corroborated the negative feedback I had received from my friends who live near there (it’s not a big town) about her attitude, and other issues she had caused in the past. It's a beautiful hotel, really cool looking with all the old decor. I will be coming back to visit California again in the future, but will not return to this hotel. Very sorry. It’s just unfortunate when the hotel isn’t very clean and you have someone at the front desk treating an acting a certain way towards paying customers. Especially paying customers who come halfway across the country.

Just absolutely awesome is all we can say. We're history nerds, so this place is for us. Holly at the front desk is just a doll. She engaged with us and our history questions. She even gave us a tour of a room upstairs with a unique photo opportunity of Main St. I want to visit during Halloween and Christmas, as the lobby alone would be so much fun to see decorated! There's a unique "book of shadows" in the lobby for those guests who may have experienced certain apparitions during their stays. While we were left alone by the spirits, it's quite entertaining to read of others' experiences...especially when you see some entries of those guests in the same room as you had!!
Their included breakfast is some of the best I've seen these days. Pre-made omelets, bacon, and sausage are all waiting in the fridge, ready to be heated up. Oatmeal, muffins, bagels, cream cheese, cereals, yogurt, juices, coffee, tea, and preserves all await to fuel your body for the day.
Overall, we were delighted by our stay, even if it was for just one night. We are looking forward to our future stays here and learning more about this rich, historical setting.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. Tamara and Hannah at the front desk gave great customer service and were very knowledgeable on the history of the building and the town. I stay at a lot of hotels and a lot of historical hotels and this place is by far one of the nicest I've ever had the pleasure to stay at. If you're into the paranormal this hotel is also a must visit! I can't wait to see all the new things they have planned for this beautiful property. Great job guys!

My mom married my step-dad there 48 years ago. They had a "old fashioned wagon train days wedding", with a fake shoot out & everything. We all stayed at the hotel after the wedding ?. What great memories?! It's still as great now as it was back then!

Such a great find for an unbeatable price. The furniture and ambiance took my breath away. The king room is small but beautiful. The bed was very comfortable. Shower is amazing. The location is unbeatable, amazing bakeries, coffee shops, thrift stores and restaurants all within walking distance. Staff is very friendly. I would absolutely stay here again in the future.

This is an historic hotel from the Gold Rush era. I stayed here about 4 decades ago before it had been refurbished and updated with modern amenities (air conditioning system, WiFi, etc.). It wasn't very comfortable then, with an old saggy bed seemingly from about the 1920's; however, I enjoyed the historical experience. This time it was much more comfortable. It didn't include such common amenities in modern hostelry such as in room coffee, fridge & microwave. However, that doesn't really matter if one wants to experience a bit of history. The rooms are small but do include sinks, toilets and showers. The interior has been beautifully restored. The parking is free for hotel guests in an adjacent city lot. The WiFi is free and fast. The price is right. I would stay here again.

So glad we made the last minute decision to stay at the National hotel instead of a generic chain. Very conscientious and personable staff. The whole vibe is cozy, gold rush chicCHIC! The perfect location for shopping, local attractions, wine tours and restaurants. We will definitely be back!
