Steer Clear! Find an alternate. The best part of the trip is the food! The cook, Christian, is extraordinary and food was more than plentiful. Captain Al sells an exciting game and much is puff and mirrors. He is completely disorganized, which was obvious before we even arrived. MOST of all he lacks integrity. We booked one year in advance, paid in full, and he promised us a 15% discount when we received his marketing email and then reneged. He told us he'd pick us up in Anchorage, and when we arrived, the night before the sail, he informed us his boat was in Seward (2.5 hours away). He sent a car for us but we had to rebook our rental car for the end of the trip; we asked him to cover that $400 increase in cost, he said he would and reneged on that too. Our trip was in July 2024, and we have reached out to him twice since returning home for the $400 refund with no reply.
On our departure day we arrived at the dock at 4pm, thanks to his misinformation! We were supposed to leave at noon and have a lunch onboard - he didn't even have the boat gassed up and ready to go...another wait. The day we arrived and the day we left were the best weather of the trip. and yet contrary to his itinerary which says we'll have lunch onboard before heading to port, we were back in the slip before noon!
Al's word is worth little - don't trust it.
There are 3 potential state rooms. Two small rooms have single beds and one large room has a king. There were no other paying passengers on our trip!
The state room was fine, the cook was terrific, the scenery was beautiful. We didn't not see one whale or bear in 4 days. We got back to Seward, took a whale cruise and they were everywhere. We saw bears on the side of the road. I think the boat is so old it has to stay pretty close to shore and can't get in rougher seas where the whales are located.
Beware!
