One of my worst experiences. My first two day was great it seem then everything turned to hell. Some of staff was really sweet to me over the weekend I stayed a total of 4 days. you have to ask for toilet paper at the front desk you can’t take ur phone or purse to breakfast lunch or dinner and when you come back the staff has thrown your belongings all over the floor if they where left in a seat and tell you you no we don’t have things left in seat that’s why your stuff is on the floor. the staff talks to you with no respect and very disrespectful. They make you sit in one room all day with everyone kids are running around no tv you can’t bring your own snacks or own drinks in all period. you must take a shower people was being forced to shower or they could not sleep when the doors opens for the rooms for bed time. The young ladies had no privacy in the shower it’s open to everyone You had woman and children sleeping on cold commons floors on mats. Kids they did not in force a bedtime for kids they ran around played by everyone bed while they where sleeping. I did not feel safe with me and my daughter being there the staffed never intervene when people was arguing and fighting using bad language. We were made to sit in an hour long church service we had no choice they said. This place is horribly ran and the staff is just as bad. You have to be there at 4 pm to sit or stand around until 7 pm you have to put your belongings in a room with everyone’s access people was stealing other people things and staff did not care. I will never Encourage anyone to go here if it’s not truly needed.

I had to leave where I was living due to my son being homeless (still 17 so a minor). This was on Dec. 14, 2024, we got dropped off at 230pm. I showed up there with my son. It was very cold, very wet, and we needed to get in from the cold I needed a place to stay. I went to the front door noticed it was locked and I was a sign that said women go around the side go in this entrance on this particular Street and men go around on the street and the entrance is on that side. So I sent my son to the men's side, while I walked around to try to find the women's side. Took me about 20 minutes to find the correct door. I seen people going in the door but nobody would let me in so I waited outside and finally an African-American woman came to the door and asked me what I wanted. And I had told her that my son and I needed a place to stay and my son was currently on the men's side. And she very rudely said we don't have any beds available. And so I asked where else I might be able to go and she very rudely said well I'm not sure and she shut the door and that was that. ( never mind that this is a warming Center up to a certain point in time of the day and they let you eat there three times a day!!) They didn't invite me in out of the cold wet weather, nothing!! I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW RUDE THEY WERE! I was actually shocked that they were so rude, after picking up my jaw from the ground, I went looking for my son to tell him that they didn't have any beds available. We went to a coffee shop right down the road, where I was speaking to somebody concerning the warming Center that they were going to open on January 5th. And she told me to go back to the mission but it was almost time to eat so my son and I went back to the mission to at least eat dinner.. We had not eaten at all that day, and my son hadn't eaten for a couple days due to him being homeless. So I go back to the ladies side door and ask them if I can come in to eat. Again the same rude lady answered the door and said "well this ain't the right door" and slammed the door in my face. I can't tell you how mad and SHOCKED at this point. ( All the reviews had told me what a great place this was, how nice everyone was... 😳( I wondered why they were being so rude to me. Was it because I was white? Not really sure why, maybe she had a VERY bad day. Still NO excuse to treat someone who doesn't know what to do in that situation like she did) I finally found another wrong door to get in for dinner, but the guy let me in anyway.. couldn't find my son, so I left without eating. I will NEVER in my life go back to this place for help or recommend ANYONE go here for help!!! My son and I needed help, and we got treated like poop on the ground. Unreal.... you can at least be nice to people and let them know things.. like which door is the correct door to get food. You could let people in to warm up since you are a warming center, instead of yelling that there are no bed's and slamming the door. But I'm only one person, so I'm sure nothing will be done about it. What's even worse is I go to Silver Hill Pentecostal Church in Rockford, and this place, The Mission, was recommended to me by a couple church leaders 😳 Not Good At All.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR HELP. PERIOD.

Left before I even spent the night. I was escorted there by an officer saying that they could help me with resources without having to stay there. Instead anytime I asked for any kind of aid or even what kind they offered besides a roof, I was told to wait until after the next thing for hours on repeat. Turns out what the head lady meant was she's not going to tell me anything until I've completely moved in. They make you turn your phone in before dinner, and don't even have it locked up anywhere secure. If somebody makes it back to the front desk before you do after, they can totally swipe your phone and just walk out with it. They won't even let you have toilet paper rolls in the bathroom. You have to guess how much you'll need, and rip it off a roll at the front desk. They started having us pile in the cafeteria for dinner right before 5 so I wasn't even hungry. I was encouraged by another resident to stuff food in my pockets and waved in line to grab a plate anyway just so other people could pick off it. I got offered speed for a cookie, which I declined. I feel like I experienced a real-life indoctrination prison, as I wasn't allowed to leave the over hour-long worship session after dinner either. I explained I have trauma from being abused by a missionary for 18 years, and they didn't care. A place meant to take in abused people, doesn't care about trauma from abuse. Before you think this is normal for these places, no it's not. The safehouse I talked to after said they were making a note in their file to never recommend Rescue Mission for anyone, because what they're doing is its own traumatic experience and keeps people stuck rather than helping them back on their feet.
