Stearns Wharf of Santa Barbara is an historic destination that may be one of the most famous of piers on the California coast! The present day pier has been reconstructed since the original commercial wharf was developed in 1872 by John P. Stearns, with funding help from W. W. Hollister.
Unlike other piers down the coast, this one is geared up for visitors, with signage, exhibits, memorabilia,, gift shops, restaurants, boat rides and of course restrooms.
I enjoyed the views of the calm ocean as well as the overview looking back towards land. It seemed as tho wherever I stopped to take pictures, other visitors were also taking in the scene beside me!
There’s easy access off the end of State Street, where public parking’s available.
I found free street parking just south of the pier. There’s also more secure paid parking areas within walking distance.
The pier is compatible with handicap access and convenience.

Stearns Wharf was the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the ocean. The sky lit up with beautiful colors, creating a picture-perfect moment. The cold ocean breeze added to the experience, making it feel peaceful and refreshing.

Walking along the pier, we soaked in the relaxed coastal vibes, watched the waves, and enjoyed the serene atmosphere. Whether you’re here for a casual stroll, seafood, or just to take in the views, it’s a must-visit spot in Santa Barbara.

A simple yet unforgettable experience—especially at sunset!

One of the must-visit places in Santa Barbara is Stearns Wharf. You can drive right onto the pier, and there's parking available. On the pier, you can try fresh seafood in local restaurants. It offers a stunning view of the ocean and the city - perfect for a walk and photos.

Bring up the wharf, and you picture sunny days and tourists in sunglasses strolling around in shorts. But it's equally delightful on a cold, chilly January winter Sunday morning when there aren't many people yet. It feeds that by-your-self introvert tendency. The scenes are still wonderful, you can be alone with your thoughts, and you can STILL get an ice cream cone if you want.

It’s a nice place - it’s fairly touristic but a bit more authentic and less vulgar than a lot of other similar piers

Beautiful California sunny afternoon to take a long walk by the wharf and enjoy the views and people watching .

Certainly a place I would come back when in town on my next visit .

Only observation and slight complain would be the amount of cars trying to come on to the wharf on a wooden paved single pass road. I think the city should limit or perhaps even ban cars for the pedestrians have a clear path without having to maneuver through cars

I loved the "pier". I found interesting the sound when you drive on it.
The sea aquarium is really interesting and educational.
We have spent a few hours in the aquarium and on the pier.
The food was also good.
I ordered lobster roll and the calamari sandwich looks amazing!!
