The Administration is easy to talk to. The recreational Dept works miracles with the musical performances and daily activities they put on for the residents. I cannot say enough positive things about Vanderman Place. My mother is coming up on being a resident there for six months and she has settled in and has such a wonderful life there. Every staff person she has interacted with is caring and attentive and most of all she is very happy there! I can see that Vanderman appreciates their staff by all the recognition they give them and that trickles down to having happy employees who care about the residents. ❤️

My husband spent 100 days at Vanderman Place from August - October 2024. I was very concerned about this rehab facility at first based on the the aging building and the Medicare.gov review. At the time, I did not have a choice for his stay for rehabilitation because I needed an available bed fairly quickly. Once my husband was place at Vanderman, I met with Lucy Harrington, the Director of Social Services. She is an amazing person with years of experience in this field. I shared my concerns with her about the reviews as well as the distance I needed to travel from my home. Lucy was a breath of fresh air.
I felt that she was honest, eliminated excuses while sharing the truth and reality about their facility, reviews and the importance of getting to know the staff and caregivers assigned to my husband. She was totally on point with that assessment. Lucy even assisted me in identifying a at-home caregiver.
My husband had some of the most amazing therapists at Vanderman than I have seen in of the other 5-6 rehab stays he has had in the past. His PTs Shirley was. amazing. Shirley took the time to get to know my husband, his background, interests and used that information to build a nice rapport with him. At times, my husband was not very cooperative but with a balance of tough love and compassion, Shirley was usually able to "draw him in."
In addition to the therapy staff, Nurse Tanya, CNAs Melody and Soujee were incredible. When my husband was unwilling to cooperate and participate at any part of the day, if Tanya was present, her authentic "momma" style, would kick in and be the antidote for his stubborness. Melody and Soujee were very tenacious and patient. When he was unwilling to get cleaned up and dressed, they would give him a 30 minute notice/warning and come back and make it happen. In addtion to the staff members already named, the housekeeping staff and the front desk ladies were also very warm friendly and welcoming.

I would definitely recommend Vanderman Place for indivuals in need of rehab services with family members who can be active in their care.

As an entertainment performer that travels to many adult care facilities in Eastern CT, I find Vanderman Place audiences and staff to mostly happy, supportive people. A nice place to visit.
